In sizing up the tasty food before them, few gourmands would pay regard
to the plate that is holding their meal. But an innovative fine bone
china collection puts the focus firmly on the serving ware, which is
valued not for its utility but rather as a work of art.

Several pieces from the new collection of the Yehidea Home Design Company
(YHDC), launched this month, have been selected for the London Design
Festival. The festival, opening this week, showcases the elegant shapes
and creative thinking of YHDC directors Yeh Yuxuan (pictured), who left a
career in advertising in 2005 to focus on making plates.

"Creation has no limits. Everything can be a carrier to present a great
idea," said the Taiwanese designer, who moved to the mainland in 2001.

"I am not selling a utensil, but rather a sort of life attitude - a fresh
outlook."

YHDC's 2007 collection includes the Big Bite plate series. The plates,
patterned with fish bones, have a chunk missing from the porcelain, as
though a hungry diner had taken a bite out of it. The missing piece is
designed to place a pair of chopsticks.

Ivory salt & pepper set is another of Yeh's favorite work. They are
delicately painted by hand with colorful patterns. Despite its
exaggerated but artistic shape, it is still functional.

Yeh shifted his interest to porcelain making in 2005 and released his
first product series a year later, leaving behind 20 years of work
experience in the advertising industry.

The new collection also includes unusual pots and the Yin & Yang plate
series. Each piece is priced from 200 to 600 yuan.
