Reappearance of ancient time-measuring devices

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-03 17:05:04

On February 2nd, a ceremony was held in the Beijing Drum tower to launch
the operation of a copper clepsydra, which was jointly developed by the
Beijing-based Repository of Cultural Relics in the Drums and Bells
Building and the Suzhou Institute of Ancient Celestial Timing Apparatus.
The Beijing Drum Tower used to be the time-measuring center through three
dynasties, the Yuan Dynasty (1206- 1367), Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644) and
Qing Dynasty (1616- 1911). The history of using copper clepsydra, beating
the drum and striking the bell dates back more than seven centuries.
