Ningbo envisions bridge to rosy prospect

The engineering construction headquarters of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge in
Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang Province, is racing against time to secure
the bridge's construction and aggressive blueprints after it is opened to
traffic next year.

"Structural work on the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the longest cross-sea bridge
in the world, has been completed by the end of last month, 189 days ahead
of schedule," said Jin Jianming, vice general director of the engineering
construction headquarters.

The road surface is being laid down, Jin added, saying with suspension
cables added, the bridge should be ready for service in June, 2008.

The Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which starts in Cixi, a county-level city under

of 36 kilometers.

The bridge is a six-lane highway bridge with a total investment of more
than 11.8 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion), mainly from the local government
and private enterprises. More than 35 percent of the investment came from
private enterprises including the Youngor Group, China's top textile
manufacturer. The China Development Bank granted loans worth five billion
yuan for the construction.
