Wen Jiabao
--Vice-Premier
Wen Jiabao, native of Tianjin, was born in September 1942 and joined the
CPC in April 1965.
He studied in the Department of Geology and Minerals at the Beijing
Institute of Geology from 1960 to 1965, and took postgraduate courses in
structural geology in his alma mater from 1965 to 1968.
For 10 years after 1968, worked with the Geomechanics Survey Team under
the Gansu Provincial Geological Bureau, serving successively as
technician and political instructor. He became the team's deputy chief in
1978 and the deputy director of the Gansu Provincial Geological Bureau in
1981.
From 1982, Wen worked in the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources,
serving successively as head of Policy and Regulations Research Section
and vice-minister.
In 1985, he was appointed deputy director of the General Office of the
CPC Central Committee, and was director of the office from 1987 to 1992.
He was alternate member of the secretariat of the CPC Central Committee
from 1987-92; alternate member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central
Committee and the committee's secretariat member from 1992 to 1997. He
has been a member of the Political Bureau and a secretariat member of the
CPC Central Committee since 1997.
